{"id":5094,"date":"2021-04-02T15:02:50","date_gmt":"2021-04-02T05:02:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hamjak.com\/ma2005\/?p=5094"},"modified":"2026-09-04T14:18:08","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T04:18:08","slug":"first-aid-class","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hamjak.com\/ma2005\/2021\/04\/first-aid-class\/","title":{"rendered":"First Aid Class"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first week back at work after a break is always busy, but this one was especially so, with Greater Brisbane going into another COVID lockdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Wednesday I attended the classroom component of a First Aid course. I was surprised it was still going ahead, but it made sense when I got there \u2013 everyone worked in health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The instructor was excellent, a retired Scottish paramedic with a no-nonsense approach. I had to listen carefully through his accent and mask, but he made the important things memorable. One point really hit home: if we ever had to perform CPR, chances were it would be on someone we loved, and we might be their only chance of survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We covered the usual DRSABCD, CPR, choking, recovery position and broken bones, with plenty of practical advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then came the irony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walking back to my car after the class, I looked away from the footpath to check for traffic just as it dipped. I rolled my ankle and fell heavily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a few minutes, some tears \u2013 it really hurt \u2013 I drove myself back to work and applied first aid:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rest<br \/>Ice<br \/>Compression<br \/>Elevation<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My boss later remarked on my dedication to putting first aid theory into practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She had a point.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A First Aid class during lockdown was memorable enough.
