AI chat

There has been a lot in the news lately about artificial intelligence (AI). Warnings about the ‘destruction of civilization’ seem to have a lot of credibility when they come from the big tech companies (CNN). The fact is AI has been around for decades in various forms. I remember computerized chessboards from growing up in the ’80s. The field has had many successes and disappointments over the years. However, lately it has developed to the point where lawmakers are now being urged to consider the risks of this technology before it progresses much further.

ChatGPT is an experimental AI platform that is being open tested – anyone can set up a free account online and try it out. I’ve been a little curious about it. There has been mention of it at university a few times, mainly in the form of warnings against plagiarism (as in, claiming credit for work that is not your own). I’ve encountered a lecturer this semester who is encouraging students to experiment with AI, not to write their assignments, but as a useful tool for research and data processing.

I started off by watching a couple of YouTube videos about ChatGPT. One that I found really helpful was Complete ChatGPT Tutorial (Become a Power User in 30 Minutes) by Santrel Media. The presenter, Mike, provides clear and concise explanations and walks you through all the steps of setting up a ChatGPT account. He demonstrates the different features and functions of the platform. I recommend watching a video like this before you try ChatGPT, it will really inform your expectations and help you get the best experience out of the platform.

I signed up for my own ChatGPT account and have been trying it out as a research tool. I have been really happy with the results! Its chat interface has aided my learning and comprehension, almost like a tutor would, by answering different questions that I have about my study topic. It allows me to examine a topic from different angles and also provides references so I can go away and do further reading for my assessments.

I have also been asking for help with personal development and it seems to give good advice in this area. For example, I asked ChatGPT how I could improve my writing and self-expression. Here is the response:

Like any skill, effective communication can be developed and improved through practice. Here are a few suggestions to help you enhance your communication abilities:

  1. Write regularly: Engage in activities that involve writing, such as journaling, blogging, or even sending thoughtful emails or letters to friends and family. Regular writing can help you organize your thoughts, articulate your ideas, and improve your written communication skills.
  2. Read extensively: Reading a variety of materials, including books, articles, and essays, can expose you to different writing styles, vocabulary, and ideas. It can expand your knowledge and enhance your ability to express yourself effectively.
  3. Join a discussion group or book club: Participating in group discussions or book clubs provides opportunities to express your thoughts, share perspectives, and engage in meaningful conversations. These interactions can help you practice expressing yourself and improve your communication skills.
  4. Practice public speaking: Seek opportunities to practice public speaking, such as by joining a toastmasters club or participating in presentations or seminars. Public speaking exercises can enhance your ability to articulate ideas clearly and confidently.
  5. Seek feedback: Request feedback from trusted friends, colleagues, or mentors regarding your communication skills. They can offer valuable insights and suggestions to help you improve.
  6. Take communication courses or workshops: Consider enrolling in courses or workshops focused on effective communication or public speaking. These resources can provide you with specific techniques, strategies, and exercises to enhance your expressive abilities.

Remember, improving communication skills takes time and practice. Be patient with yourself and celebrate small victories along the way. With consistent effort and a growth mindset, you can develop and refine your communication abilities.

ChatGPT session 15 June 2023.

I really like the tone of the responses, it is positive and friendly. I will continue to experiment and explore the possibilities of ChatGPT as a useful tool.
