  • Updated Credits

Getting a clearer idea of my study plan now, with updated credits from UTAS. After a couple of changes, they have finally granted:

    • BFA103 Accountability and Accounting
    • BMA101 Introduction to Management
    • BFA104 Accounting Context and Method
    • 5 electives

BFA103 is a core unit, BMA101 is one of the Management units and BFA104 is an an Accounting unit. I’m not studying accounting, so I guess I can nominate this as further elective unit.

Currently studying BEA111 Introduction to Markets and the Economy. Enrolled in BEA140 Data Analysis for Business in late May.

  • Study Break

Not a break from study, a break TO study.. I’m up at Dicky Beach at Portobello Apartments – found a good deal on AirBnB. It is rainy up here but it hasn’t stopped me going for an early morning walk up to Moffat Beach, where I picked up a coffee and foccacia for breakfast.

On track with the book learnin’ so far, I finished the Week 3 workshop and quiz last night. This week I aim to catch up Week 4 and 5, and make a start on the first assignment. I also want to do the online component of my First Aid course (for work), it will give me a break from economics! I would also like to finish the Canva design course I started, for another bit of diversion.

Week 3 work was a bit tricky. Can’t quite wrap my head around the demand and supply curves which both shift in opposite directions according to different variables. Might have gelled by the time I go back to revise, the brain continues working sub-consciously to make sense of things I often find.

My apartment here at Portobello is lovely. It even has a full kitchen and laundry. I did have to move some furniture around to set up my study area – not enough power points. Next time I will remember to bring a power extension lead. Here are a couple of pics.

I had to move the sofa in first pic and shift the kitchen table in its place, closer to power point. The second sofa in this pic remains in original position. The table is heavier than it looks, the counter top has a poly-resin granite-style surface.

  • Intro to Markets and the Economy

This unit is my first taste of the subject of economics, and it is quite interesting. Not as dry a topic as I first thought it might be. It is a study of human behaviour – always fascinating. Specifically, economics is the study of the choices made to satisfy infinite wants, given our finite resources. Resources include money, time, knowledge. The choices are made by people, businesses, societies, governments.

Economics looks at why and how choices are made, and the consequences of those choices on both the micro and macro levels. It makes various assumptions, such as people generally make rational decisions based on information and logic. The consequences of a particular choice include making trade-offs against opportunities offered by alternative choices.

Understanding how incentives can drive different choices – link1 link2 link3.

This week there are four short lectures with study notes, and a chapter reading from the textbook. Based on these are some exercises, which will be discussed at the workshop next week.

  • Study Plan

I’m in week one of my first unit of study towards a Bachelor of Business. Final exam for this unit is in June, and there are 24 units in the degree, so there is a long road ahead. I am planning to apply for credits from my Diploma of Accounting, and may eventually take on two units per semester, but for now it is about getting my brain back into gear for critical thinking and essay writing.

I enrolled through Open Universities Australia and selected the University of Tasmania program because it includes Accounting and Management. At this stage I’m leaning toward a Major in Management, and hope to use some Accounting credits toward my elective subjects.

  • Credit transfer

Saw my trainer today, organised to transfer credit from my last Cert course to two subjects in the course I’m undertaking now. Nice little short cut.

  • Certificate four

A good feeling to have my certificate iv under wraps; its arrival in the mail yesterday was accompanied by a small dance of triumph.
