Woohoo.. one of the other students posted on the forum that she had her final results for the unit, I checked for mine and sure enough they were there too.
Couldn’t be happier with the result: 92/100 – High Distinction

I want to get away from the standards unfriendly Webpage Builder system that I’ve been using for a few years now. It was a good quick solution at one time, but I have been unhappy with it for a while.
I’ve found a great alternative – CMS Made Simple. It’s an open source content management system built on the php/mysql platform. Like most open source, it has a good support community – it is well tested and has lots of add-ons. It is standards compliant, incorporates strict separation of content from appearance, and has a high level of customisation.
I’ve been testing it for someone whose subscription to Webpage Builder runs out in a couple of months. So far there has been no problem transferring their content over – including a membership application form, a photo album, and members only (login required) content. The templating should be a snap also.
I’ve found it very easy to use but it may take a little time for her to get used to the new system. So I have to get my head around the regular tasks they will be performing and the best way to reduce the stress of learning a new way of doing things.
There is an option for users on a PHPBB forum to receive an email notification when there has been a reply posted to a specific thread. I usually switch off the option for my own account, because all the extra emails annoy me. So I didn’t know when one of the forums I help administer started having a problem with this.
The users who reported it claimed the notifications had stopped a few days ago. The last change made to the forum was a few weeks ago when I installed an upgrade patch. There didn’t seem to be any explanation for it.
I did a search on Google and there were a couple of reported instances, which all seemed to have something to do with the host server implementing anti-spam measures. It is very likely to be what has occurred in this case. To find a solution I had to find a different way for our forum to send the mail.
It was quite easy in the end. I enabled the option for users to send email to each other from the forum (I’m not sure why this had to be done, but it wouldn’t work otherwise). I changed the mail sending config from ‘mail’ to ‘smpt’ and specified the hosting account username and password. For the mail server I specified ‘localhost’. Did the trick!
With my part time ISP support job winding up this month I am smartening up my resume and arming myself for job search.
My resume hasn’t been touched for 7 years – that was the last time I used it, when my position at the bank was made redundant and I switched careers and found a job with an ISP. There are things in that resume that I only have vague recollection about – like the “Designing Interactive Web Applications” through Brisbane TAFE back in Feb 2000. I wouldn’t mind revisiting that one, just out of curiousity!
I’d forgotten about the employee awards I’d received at the bank – for accuracy, attention to detail, being a team player and reaching the milestone of “100 days of error-free cash handling” from my time as a bank teller! All that stuff seems like it was in another lifetime, but I must remember to look at it again when I need a boost of self-confidence.
I remember when the job at the bank ended, I swore never to return to a banking job! I was very pleased to find work in a different industry, and I felt sorry for my colleagues who went to work for another bank when all our jobs went. Times change and I don’t think I would mind a part-time job in a local bank branch if it helped bring in some money, was close by and left me enough time to do my study and web work.
So I’m brushing up my resume writing skills. Here are some good resources I’ve found:
Wandering past the local community noticeboard today my eye was caught by a poster promoting the new album of local singer/songwriter Kirsti Falconer. I’d never heard of Kirsti before but apparently she has quite a following in her local community.
Back home and on the net, discovered she is on MySpace and listened to a couple of tracks. She hesitantly describes herself as a “Melissa Etheridge without so much edge”. Hurricane has a nice bluesey sound, Believe is very folksey. I like it and wouldn’t mind hearing more.
She is playing at a combined concert at the local town hall at 8.00pm on Saturday, 28th April. I’ve marked it in my diary and my sister has just informed me she’ll come along too!
