  • Bubba Hotep

What a bizarre movie! I chose this one because it stars Bruce Campbell, best known for his role as hero Ash in the Evil Dead trilogy.

In Bubba Hotep Campbell plays an aged Elvis Presley (aka The King of Rock and Roll), living in an old people’s home regretting the bad decisions of his earlier life – such as exchanging places with an Elvis impersonator, who died (that infamous heart attack in the lavatory) before they could switch back.

All around him the old folks are being killed off by an ancient Egyptian mummy, who is inexplicably dressed in a cowboy suit. It is up to Elvis and his buddy President John F. Kennedy to battle the evil creature and save the souls of their fellow residents.

Campbell does a humorous Elvis, without any element of ridicule. There are so many theories about Presley’s death that this one doesn’t actually seem too far off-base and you can really sympathise with the Elvis in this story.

“It would have been too easy to play the potbellied Presley for easy yuks, but Campbell, under layers of makeup, gets those laughs with some subtlety, while finding actual dignity and pathos in the forgotten King.” – CANOE Jam! review by Mike Bell

This movie is probably not for everyone, I think it takes a somewhat warped mind to appreciate the genius of Bruce Campbell.

The prequel Bubba Nosferatu is currently in production.

  • Pirates Arrr!

Jo and I went and saw Pirates of the Carribean 2 today at Redbank. Wasn’t totally blown away by it but enjoyed it as light entertainment (it is Disney after all!). I’ll probably go along to the third movie which comes out next year.

Bit of a surprise development with the Elizabeth Swann character, it will be interesting to see how that pans out in the next movie.

Some background from The Daily Telegraph on Johnny Depp’s characterisation of Captain Jack Sparrow:

“The actor initially mortified Disney executives with his decision to play Sparrow as a loopy, smirking and sometimes effeminate pirate.”

The movie certainly had me wondering how a character like Captain Jack manages to command his crew of salty dogs! Arrr!

They are a pretty accommodating crew now I think of it.. quite happy to take orders from landlubbers William and Elizabeth too!

  • Sassy Teeth

I’ve just dropped our 9-y/o Cavalier at the vet to get a couple of teeth removed. She has to go under for the procedure. I’m worried about her, she has a heart murmur and she’s old and the vet said it will be very risky.

We lost our other baby girl a few months ago, so I’m feeling kind of anxious. Fingers crossed she comes out of it ok.

Sasha has responded well to the skin treatments, she looks healthier than ever.

  • Uni Student

Last night I applied to enrol at Open University for Internet Studies. I’m kind of excited and at the same time slightly nervous about whether I will be able to do it.

I considered tertiary study years ago, but the timing never seemed right. It is amazing that the thought hasn’t re-occured until now, it seems like I’ve been at a loose end for a long time, certainly since I gave away QConnect last year.

The women I’ve met online at AYW have been a good influence. A lot of them have been to Uni, a few of them are doing post-grad studies and a couple are in the same situation as me, having never studied at tertiary level.

The big question is, will my brain handle it? My mind hasn’t exactly been getting a lot of exercise for the past couple of years!

I’ve signed up for a UniPrep course as well as my first unit in Internet Studies, so I can only give it my best shot and hope I pass!

The BA (Internet Studies) is about the human dimension of the Internet – how people network interconnect, and creatively design the Internet. This major allows students to develop key skills and knowledge of the Internet as a social technology of communication and interaction. It combines professional outcomes, scholarly creativity and technological skills with an emphasis on deeper understandings, as well as the chance for innovative, cutting-edge project work. The approach is interdisciplinary and develops skills in one or more of website design, online public communication, virtual community management analysing political and social uses of the Internet. Because of the possibility in this course to link studies with other disciplines such as media, business and computing, many options exist to create a degree program that suits individual needs and interests. Depending on their choice of units in the course, students will be prepared for work or further research in: communications; media and marketing; content management; Internet policy and regulation; online research and analysis; virtual communities; website design and development.

  • Chocolate Hair

My long hair has been annoying me like crazy lately, forever wrestling with it and the knots! So today I had it trimmed and coloured. The length went from just above my waist to just below my shoulder blade. The colour went from a light ash brown to a chocolate brown.

My appointment was first for the day, so no waiting! (always my pet hate at hairdressers). Plus to my surprise I had a male hairdresser; it was so nice to be pampered for two hours by a man!

After telling myself beforehand I was not going to buy any of the expensive salon hair products, of course I walked out with some! Bryce (hairdresser) just did such a wonderful job today and I felt compelled to follow his advice for taking care of it!

  • Deep Funk

I’m in a deep funk. Come on woman, snap out of it. Having a bad few days. Haven’t been eating right, or taking medication. Snap out of it. Get past it.

I feel so damn sorry for myself, isolated and alienated. I’m angry at all the time wasted, life is slipping away hour by hour yet I waste it, feeling depressed. I waste time wishing my life away instead of enjoying it.

Mum just dropped in for a coffee, it was a brief bright spark in the day. When she left the dark mood returned with vicious intensity. I just feel like doing myself in.

It is school holidays, Mum is picking up a couple of grandkids tomorrow. It is niece’s birthday on Thursday, H and I bought some gifts for her. I guess we’ll drop around to the house sometime to give it to her. At the same time I sort of dread this, I feel like I carry my dark cloud everywhere and people are glad to see the back of me.

There are days when I wish I’d never been born, then I wouldn’t have to worry about the consequences of ending it. I just feel empty, my mind is a void. No virtues, no intelligence, no love to give, nothing special. What good am I?

I’ve nothing to give. I am nothing. Why does H want me with him? Why does anyone want me around? Wish I didn’t exist. I can understand why people drink and take drugs, to escape. I just want to escape. I am sick and tired of feeling like this. Going mad.

I think if I was alone, if there weren’t people who cared what happened to me, if I didn’t have my dog to care for, I would get in my car and keep driving until I ran out of fuel. Then I would get out of the car and keep walking. I would walk and walk and not care about where I was going or what was happening along the way. I would walk until I reached the sea and then I would wade out through the waves and keep swimming until I disappeared.
