No sports fans in our household so the Olympics are pretty much a non-event as far as we’re concerned. It is not that I think sport or athleticism is complete rubbish, I just get turned off by all of the fanaticism, commercialism and media saturation. It is just too much, so I switch off completely.

I heard the opening ceremony was a fabulous spectacle, but the toxic smog levels in Beijing are still a concern despite the measures to try and reduce them.

Another issue is the protesting for human rights, which concerns Chinese policies restricting freedom of speech and access to information; persecution of opposition; and relations with Taiwan and Tibet.

If nothing else the Olympics does put a spotlight on all the bad things happening in China.

Feeling a lot better today; it’s just as well, started going stir crazy being stuck at home the last five days. Well enough to roll up at the dog rescue this morning and take some puppies for walks. Zac and Roxie were happy to see me and I them, but was also sort of sorry to see they were still there. Both deserve a good home, not the dreary pens they’re in.

Poor little Border X Bobby didn’t make it. He’d taken ill last week after being wormed. Ludelle thinks he caught something during his stay at the pound next door. She’s not happy with the care the dogs are getting there. Very worried about the little Kelpie who came to us from there last week. Hasn’t eaten for a couple of days now, we hope he is going to make it.

Catching up now on a weeks’ worth of housework, job applications, web work and study. Work at the Hospice tomorrow and the dogs again on Wednesday morning.

Started with a scratchy throat yesterday morning, I now have the bug that has been going around. Lots of people at work have had it, mum and dad had it, people were coughing at church and the supermarket, and the dog rescue lady had it. Only surprise is how long it took to get to me!

Sadly, no dog walkies this morning. I was very sorry to have to ring and cancel but it doesn’t make sense to make myself worse. Picked up some herbal remedies that are supposed to ease cold symptoms, at the moment they are not really doing much but hopefully will help me sleep more peacefully tonight.

Puppy dogs are coming and going with the rehousing program. Still have Roxie and Zac with us, but Inka, Gabe and Chevy have all found good homes. We had a sweet little Mini Foxy X with us a couple of days. A couple of new boys – Bobby a handsome Border X (has stumpy tail), and Dusty a lovely tan coloured Kelpie.

Hoping Zacky boy gets a place this week.

Truckie friend has been warning us to stock up on extra food and fuel supplies as serious shortages may result from the stoppage which commences midnight Sunday 27 July.
