Ilse Can Pull Socks
March 23rd, 2008 @ 10:48 am

I’m currently training Ilse my mini schnauzer to assist me, and she is going real well with the training. I also find that I’m enjoying the challenge too; as it has given me a new interest in dog training. At the moment I am training Ilse to tell the difference between a shoe and a sock and as I have also taught her to tugĀ  on a toy she can now open a door and pull a sock off too, she is very keen and obedient.

To get a dog to discriminate between objects the trainer starts off by getting the dog to retrieve objects one at a time. Then after the dog has done that for a while the trainer then puts two objects down. They may also drop the fetch command and just identify the object.

I also found that blocking the object that I don’t want useful too, and at the same time I am facing the object that I do want. And when the dog start to look as though they know which direction I want them to go, I then send them while I am out in front of the objects. Also another thing that I do is change the positions of the objects that I’m using.
