I just had a training session with Ilse my miniature schnauzer, and I took her dumbell with us out in the backyard. And although she has been retrieving various objects with our assistant dog training, I haven’t been getting her to retrieve her dumbell for quite some time. And the last time I have thrown the dumbell out for her she was still anticipating and going before I sent her. However, since I have been working on getting Ilse to retrieve different objects instead of throwing the objects in front of us, I have been leaving her on a sit stay and placing the objects out before I get her to retrieve the object I want.
And as I have been doing this for a while now, I have found it has really helped her to know what stay means, as when I told Ilse to stay and threw the dumbell out she stayed there till I sent her and I just thought that this’ll be a good suggestion for other dog trainers that might have this problem.
As the suggestion is to get dogs out of going before we send them, we should put them on a sit stay then go out in front of them and placing the article down ourselves instead of throwing it out; then we go back to our dogs and get them to retrieve it.
