The Harsh Cry Of The Heron is about people in the family holding grudges for years and jealousy. And Takeo knows that his brother in law is planning something, and because the Arai family are stirring up trouble this leads to Takeo and his eldest daughter Shigeko visiting the Emperor, which turns out to be successful.
But on their way back Takeo and company are involved in a skirmish and soon after it then develops into a real battle. But as Shigeko injures the agressor Saga Hideki he then withdraws his troops. Then as he knew what The Arai had planned Saga Hideki sends Shigeko a letter offering his support. Also on his way home Takeo finds out that his youngest son had died, and his sister in law Hana is causing more problems.
