Still Determined To Knit
April 1st, 2010 @ 1:31 pm

Near the end of last year one of the female supervisors from the disability support group that I go to that is called ALARA or Luke’s Place told me that she was teaching herself how to knit so that she could teach me, as I have expressed having interest in it. However she told me recently that when she tries to read a book she falls asleep.

And when she told me this I was carrying two heavy books around in my bag, and they were books on knitting projects which I wanted to show this lady. And then later on when I decided to get them out to show her the two books, she didn’t seem interested in looking at them.

Then as I was putting the knitting books back in my bag I realize that I will be doing knitting all by myself, but then realizing that doesn’t bother me as I have knitted before when I was in primary school and so I’m quite confident that I’ll be able to pick up knitting quite easily.

Also I can work independently, and am definitely not a person that needs an audience when I’m doing something. And I was telling my parents about this lady’s lack of interest when I tried showing her my knitting books and my mum then told me that a lot of people aren’t interested in reading, or looking at books. But then I have noticed that this supervisor can make herself read magazines, and newspapers though I don’t think she reads from cover to cover.

And my mother then recalled a lady that she knew from dog training, that also couldn’t make herself read books though she was quite successful with her training. And this is when we were living in New South Wales in The Blue Mountains, and this is also a good example that knowledge can come from other places and not just from reading books.

My mother has also kindly offered to help me to teach myself to knit.

Also why I decided to get a few books on knitting projects was because, I knew that I wanted to get an idea on the sort of things I could knit? And that is also an example of how useful books can be too. And then my mum told me yesterday that I should start off with not planning to knit anything, but just learn how to knit the various stitches so that I’ll know what needs to be done to make the variety of patterns.

Mum was telling me about your knitting Jo. She said that she dropped in to show you how to do something, and you had already worked it out yourself from the book. You might be interested in visiting this lady’s blog http://bellsknits.com – she makes lovely knitted shawls and other things, and writes about her knitting experiences. She and I used to hang out on the same online chat forum.
