Drawspace Art Lesson B02
September 10th, 2007 @ 8:33 am

The next of Brenda’s drawing lessons is headed “Seeing Shapes and Proportions.” And to be able to draw well an artist needs to be able to break up their subject into simple shapes like circles, squares, triangles etc… then measure spaces so that they can draw more accurately; as Brenda says that the process of drawing any subject will become less intimidating when an artist begins to understand how to render proportions accurately.

As when an artist has taken the time to carefully observe where the various drawn parts are and have drawn them in their correct places their drawings will look more balanced and it also takes time and a fair bit of patience to get it looking that way. Also in this lesson Brenda gets us to draw a pretend duck that is also a candle, and to get the shape of this duck we had to try to draw its body which is a shape of a kidney; then we drew a circle for its head and then a triangle for its beak. Brenda also shows us how to measure the distances in our drawings to get the balance right. And I had a few goes at doing this duck as when I first drawn it I did it my own way then had a go at drawing it the way that Brenda advised then after I done it I then signed and put today’s date on the back.
