Saturday morning, finally I’ve the time and motivation to run a few errands but it is a public holiday – ANZAC day. As I drove around getting a couple of things done I saw a lot of Australian flags in evidence. I thought about the service men and women who have been involved in a war effort, sent overseas to fight. What it must have been like for their families, the people left behind. The unthinkable tragedies when son or daughter did not return home. The horrors experienced by those who did come home. Let’s not forget the grief, the loss, the sacrifice.

Off work sick
Well my head cold has worsened and I’ve called in sick at work today. I’d called sick yesterday at the pound, hoping it would help my chances for today. Oh well. Ros has suggested I have tomorrow off too, so I’m 100% better. Not sure about that yet.

Munching on a wampi
Wampi are unusual looking fruit, a little like lychees but with a smooth almost papery skin which pops open to reveal the juicy grape like flesh inside. We have just planted a wampi tree in our backyard, and I’m munching on some fruit at the moment – not from our tree, a few years before that happens but I discovered some at the local markets. Quite tasty, although I think will taste heaps better straight off the tree.
Also stopped in at my favourite second-hand warehouse and picked out a couple armfuls of clothes – couple of skirts, couple of pants, some tops and a couple of jackets. Terrific buy for under $40.
Work going ok. Still working on budgets, and strategic planning. Was chuffed to get a pat on the back from former treasurer about the budget worksheet I’d produced, which was a surprise. I’d expected him to dismiss it because it was quite different to worksheets he’d prepared as treasurer.
Feeling a bit blue today. Got a bad head cold. Think I’ll start an un-social network, I’ll call it “Facedown”.

Fruit trees
Great timing with all the rain we’ve had lately; we’ve been planting fruit trees.
We have several varieties of citrus including tangerine, orange, mandarine, lemon and lime. We have several different varieties of tropical fruits including mango, chocolate pudding tree (black sapote), white sapote, abiu – a caramel flavoured fruit, tropical peach, tropical pear, and barbados cherry. We have an avocado, a green olive, several coffee plants and a couple of passionfruit vines.

Kids
Lately I’ve been having some regret about not having kids. It’s kind of weird because I’ve never had any strong maternal drive and I’ve always felt I would make a lousy, inattentive parent. I’m finding more and more that I feel a bit sad when other women talk about their children.
It is probably that old stereotype about a woman’s biological clock ticking.. I’m 40 this year and although it is not uncommon these days for women in their forties to have children it becomes less and less of a likelihood.
Particularly when you’re married to a guy who is happy about being childless and has no desire to alter the status quo. And when I analyse our situation I can’t really justify why he and I should bring a child into the world.
Mum once told me that you don’t have to justify children. The thought of a baby terrifies me; but sometimes I wonder if a life without children can be justified.

Don’t know what to blog about
I’ve been so preoccupied with work lately that I haven’t really had much to write about on here. We’re doing our annual budgets and business planning at the moment, going full swing into cost centres which is a first for the organisation and for me. There are times when an accountancy degree would be very handy. It’s very challenging work, at times I feel so overwhelmed it’s like I’m teetering right on the edge of a cliff. I’m managing to hold my balance somehow.
My studies have dropped off and I want to pick them up again before I lose interest or run out of time. I’m determined to finish the course this year. The problem is the time-waster units I’ve got to complete before I get to the subjects more useful to me. Well, I better just bite the bullet and get them done.
Health has been pretty good lately, although this has been a crap week for diet. I’ve been working late, grabbing some junk food on the way home and not eating any square meals. Last night H. even had a go at me for the junk I’ve been eating, I had a couple of chicken wings, cold from the fridge and a bowl of icecream.
Well that’s all for now, I want to go and crash in front of the idiot box and not think about anything for a while.
